At age 72, I am planning to walk across American to bring awareness of how exercise etc. can help bring about a healthier heart and vascular system, lower blood pressure, etc., and to raise funds, as well, for the American Heart Association. I welcome you to follow me on my journey! My plan for 2010 is to walk from Lewes, DE to St. Louis, MO or further if possible. In 2005 I was leading a sedentary life and weighed 201 lbs. I started walking and then running and lost 36 lbs, significantly lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol, and raised my good cholesterol equally. My journey will commence on or about April 30th. Help the A.H.A. by donating thru the web site: Michianaheartwalk.kintera.org/johnwalksamerica. If all goes well I hope to be in St. Louis sometime in September 2010.

9-29-10 Wednesday

Rode 31.5 miles today. Had lunch in Boonville, MO. Then I met the beast that tried to kill me. The hill coming west out of Boonville was at a grade of 5%, according to the locals, and it went on for about 6 or 7 miles. I rode 7 miles without stopping and my body was screaming at me. I felt like my heart was going to blow out the top of my head. But, as you can tell it did not. After that it leveled out to the normal 1% or thereabouts up grade. I ended up at the Pilot Grove B & B, where I met Dolores and Virgil, the owners, we talked for an hour or so. Once again I was the only one staying there and had the run of the house. I bought some power bars for the next day at Casey's where you would have thought I was buying gold rather than some tiny 230 calorie bars. And so it goes in the Show Me State.
